Valentine's Day has a long and distinguished history.
Valentine's Day is claimed to have originated in Europe and was brought to North America by British settlers in the 19th century. It began as a liturgical feast day for saints named Valentinus in Western Christianity.
Several Valentine's Day-related stories were told. According to legend, the holiday was inspired by a popular hagiographical narrative of Saint Valentine of Rome. Saint Valentine was imprisoned for marrying soldiers who were prohibited to marry and ministering to Christians who were oppressed by the Roman Empire. Saint Valentine, according to legend, healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, during his captivity, and before his execution, he wrote her a farewell letter inscribed "Your Valentine."
When the tradition of courtly love flourished in the 14th century, the day became associated with romantic love. It grew into an occasion in which lovers acknowledged their love for one another by giving flowers, offering candy, and sending greeting cards in 18th-century England (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day 2022 is now celebrated as an important cultural and economic event in many parts of the world, despite the fact that it is not a national holiday in any country.
